How do Laboratory Friction Parameters Compare With Observed Fault Slip and Geodetically Derived Friction Parameters? Insights From the Longitudinal Valley Fault, Taiwan

چکیده
Laboratory measurements of constitutive frictional parameters are commonly inferred to explain the wide variety slip behavior seen on natural faults. The extent which these small-scale directly relate fault remains obscure. In this work, we compare laboratory-determined surface-derived samples from along length Longitudinal Valley Fault (LVF) in Taiwan with observed and obtained geodetically. LVF displays partially locked creeping sections a Mw 6.8 event 2003 produced transient acceleration adjacent that can be used determine for direct comparison laboratory-measured ones. We find friction markedly different collected fault, former showing lower coefficients more positive values stability parameter (a−b). Moreover, product (a−b) effective normal stress, determined geodetically, very closely those measured laboratory. Mineralogical microstructural analyses gouges show some mineralogically similar produce distinctly behavior, may related presence distribution kaolinite. conclude overall upscaling laboratory properties appears reflect well large-scale

Sensitivity of 3d Rupture Dynamics to Fault Geometry and Friction Parameters the Friction Law
We scale the various parameters deening a 3D fault model (i.e. characteristic distance and time of a state friction law, size and aspect ratio of the fault, medium impedance) and derive two dimensionless parameters governing the typical dynamics of the fault through single or multiple ruptures. The diier-ent faulting regimes are illustrated by a series of numerical simulations. As the parameter...
متن کاملA Wideband Magnetoresistive Sensor for Monitoring Dynamic Fault Slip in Laboratory Fault Friction Experiments
A non-contact, wideband method of sensing dynamic fault slip in laboratory geophysical experiments employs an inexpensive magnetoresistive sensor, a small neodymium rare earth magnet, and user built application-specific wideband signal conditioning. The magnetoresistive sensor generates a voltage proportional to the changing angles of magnetic flux lines, generated by differential motion or rot...
متن کاملFault friction parameters inferred from the early stages of afterslip following the 2003 Tokachi-oki earthquake
[1] We use subdaily GPS time series of positions in the first 5 hours following the 2003 Tokachi-oki earthquake (Mw = 8.0) located offshore of Hokkaido, Japan, to estimate frictional parameters for the afterslip zone on the subduction interface. The data show little motion immediately after the earthquake with sudden acceleration at about 1.2 hours after the main shock. This coincides with the ...
متن کاملΓ-convergence for a Fault Model with Slip-weakening Friction and Periodic Barriers
We consider a three-dimensional elastic body with a plane fault under a slip-weakening friction. The fault has -periodically distributed holes, called (smallscale) barriers. This problem arises in the modeling of the earthquake nucleation on a large-scale fault. In each -square of the -lattice on the fault plane, the friction contact is considered outside an open set T (small-scale barrier) of ...
متن کاملScaling of Fault Parameters for Continental Strike-Slip Earthquakes
The long-standing conflict between the predictions of elastic dislocation models and the observation that average coseismic slip increases with rupture length is resolved with application of a simple displacement-depth function and the assumption that the base of the seismogenic zone does not result from the onset of viscous relaxation but rather a transition to stable sliding in a medium that ...
